My idea is to have a Pi and USB HDD in the car to feed the car stereo, and control this via smartphone using the Pi as a Wireless access point.
Any chance of getting the Access Point stuff into Rune?

(if I must do it myself it will result in divorce while learn how!)

Thanks for this work! I got it going yesterday. We had some problems getting the image burned, but that seems to be a flaky sd drive in the laptop. Once I burned it on a different laptop, BANG! all worked. I set it up with dedicated processor for MPD like you showed. It is fast. I did notice that when using the raspi audio out, there was no volume control. It was stuck at 100%. When I switched to PCM-5102 I2S, volume worked. I did not listen to it as my card was not at home, but did see that it appears to work. I'll try the 5102 board I built, which works on the PiB+, this evening to make sure but I am pretty convinced it is all OK. Roll on 0.4!

EDIT: 5102 works with the dt setting of hifiberry on the Pi2!

I thought Pi + usb hdd in glovebox connected to aux in, controlled by (passenger's) phone via WiFi.

All portable, out of sight of prying eyes. And at journey's end take it out of the car to use in hotel/country cottage. Add a battery pack and speakers and we're good for the beach/pool/garden.

Summer's comin'.......

If you do implement this could you set it to switch to access point mode if there is no WiFi connection?

This solves two problems:

1. Initial setup can be done over wifi and you can easily connect to a new network eg. connect to access point and enter WiFi details.

2. Take it out of the house and boot up on battery connect to access point and enjoy.

Thanks for this info. My problem with RPi B and EW-7811Un (Runeaudio nightly build) is, that the wifi connection falls asleep after some minutes. My router says, there are only a few MBps up-/download, so Airplay is a dropout thing. The interruptions disappear with LAN, so I think the Edimax is the problem. I disabled power management by adding /etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf (line: options 8192cu rtw_power_mgnt=0), but the interruptions are still there. I have no connection problems with Raspbian/Shairport and EW7811Un. Then the connection is nearly 150 MBps (same place, same power supply).

First post so sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is exactly what I have been trying to work out.

This is exactly what i did. In my setup there is a second pi to render the UI to my LCD.

With the new 4 core pi could this all be handled with one pi?

But i'm working on a user interface for local displays (HDMI).

Local display via Hdmi would be fantastic, particularly if it could be implemented with touch screen or some buttons for control.
When you say your working on a user interface is this a look thing or a menu structure?
Sorry for the dumb question I'm just interested, and not sure how this is built or structured.

first of all a big thank you to all contributors to this thread, it has been a source of inspiration for me. Using an Odroid C1 instead of a Pi 2 (no USB bandwidth problem and Gb ethernet) I have not yet found the time to use the cookbook to build my Rune Audio from scratch, still I have one question for Frank:

Frank you build two packages for Da Alchemist in order for him to be able to implement room correction via brutefir, would it be possible to use those packages on the Odroid platform or would I need different packages

One question for Da Alchemist:

I for one would be very keen to know how your project of integrating room correction via brutefir went, could you let us know?

Yes, because of its ARMv7 core, these packages should work also with the Odroid C1.

Brutefir is running absolutly flawlessly on the Pi2 I am using it with a PCM5122 card.
I will make a short description on the "DIY and tweaks" section.
