Peter wroteThanks Skrodahl, I tried this, but snd-bcm2835 remained. I edited the raspberrypi.conf file, and commented out snd-bcm2835.
I apologise for being a pain, sorry for taking your time. I have now commented out "snd-bcm2835, and this no longer shows in debug log (new log here

When playing 24/192 files, cpu load is still 88% - 89%. :cry:
I should have mentioned that you need to login as root, or use 'sudo' in front of the command. Good to see that you were able to edit the file anyway.
If you are using a USB dac, you will most probably not be able to play 24/192 tracks. This is because USB and ethernet is sharing the same bus on the RPi, and the bandwidth is not sufficient for these tracks.
To play hi resolution files, you will need to use one of the DACs built for RPi using I2S, such as PiDAC, HifiBerry or one of the other alternatives discussed in the forums.
nic wroteMuch , much better with a PiDac in place of the USB XMOS π So far had had to restart mpd only once . I do notice the 'connecting' spinning arrow appears very briefly when navigating but it's useable and sounds very good . There is a subtle improvement in terms of sound quality with Rune and the PiDac with hardware volume compared to Volumio with software volume .
cheers
Nic
I also noticed that MPD could stop working from time to time. Here's a workaround:
Add "Restart=always" to the "[Service]" section in /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/mpd.service:
[root@runeaudio multi-user.target.wants]# cat mpd.service
[Unit]
Description=Music Player Daemon
After=network.target sound.target
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/bin/mpd --no-daemon
Restart=always
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
